Sisters in Circles

In 2019, I founded Sisters in Circles, a global community of women whose mission is to support one another by collaborating on projects, empowering each other, encouraging creativity, and providing service to those in need.

This year we’ve sewn face masks to combat the spread of Coronavirus. The masks are handmade with African wax print fabric by independent seamstresses who earn a fair wage. Net profits are donated to our African partner, Sisters Uganda, and organizations whose mission aligns with our own. We believe that equality, justice, and health are human rights. We are always striving to further our mission of cultivating a positive impact in our local, national, and international community of women.

*For every piece of jewelry sold, I contribute to the Sisters in Circles fund to help young women in Uganda learn practical skills that will enable them to live healthier, more prosperous lives.

Finding Joy Through Giving Back

Ever since I was young, I’ve had a heart for giving. I’ve crafted gifts for people my entire life—little pillows for mom, drawings for dad, quilts for friends, and of course, jewelry. After I graduated from art school and settled into my business and my first house, I realized that there was a whole world beyond my own, one where people had much less “stuff” but had an abundance of joy.

At 26, I boarded a plane for Cameroon in western Africa to see what life was like there. I worked with a NGO for three months, learning about women’s lending groups, sustainable forestry, and assisting in the construction of a school for orphans. My heart was full in a way I had never experienced before. I felt exceptionally passionate, like my life had purpose. From that moment on, I knew that I must weave service work into my life and career.

In 2016, I visited Uganda with a small group of women. We went to explore ways of connecting with and supporting women, including meeting groups of craftswomen and organizations that strive to empower girls and women. Since then, I’ve continued visiting Uganda, collaborating with communities and craft groups, as well as organizations focused on female health and hygiene education.
